COLD PROCESS SOAP MAKING

Soap is one of those everyday items that we seldom think about, and we use it without really knowing how it works or what it is made of. Soap is a salt of fatty acid and can be made from animal fats or vegetable oils. When sodium hydroxide (lye) is mixed with fats or oils, a chemical reaction called saponification occurs. Saponification is the process of making soap and results in the formation of glycerin and soap.

Cold process soap making involves mixing fats and oils with lye, then adding fragrance, color, and other additives. The mixture is then placed into a mold and allowed to saponify for 24-48 hours. After saponification is complete, the soap is removed from the mold and cut into bars.

It is then allowed to cure for 4-6 weeks to allow the bars to harden and the saponification process to finish. Making cold-process soap is a fun and rewarding hobby that can also be turned into a business.
